Can you feed cats sardines? A lot of people ask that question. Yes, you can. And the cats will love you for it. Besides which, all those omega-3 fatty acids will do them a world of good.
“Can you feed cats sardines?“ may seem like a silly question, but … I think the people who ask may be worrying about about feeding cats whole fish, complete with bones. No worry. They’re quite tiny, and your cat won’t mind them at all at all at all.
Of course, sardines alone do not a balanced meal make. So here are some suggestions:
- Serve the sardines with water to make sure the cat gets proper hydration.
- Feed a sardine as a special treat
- In a pinch, if you run out of cat food and you’re in a hurry, you can open a can of sardines and serve them up.
Meeeeooooowwww! Pawpad-lickin’ good!
But don’t just feed them to YOUR cat. What about the strays, who haven’t had a good meal in who knows how long? If you have strays in the neighborhood, consider leaving a sardine treat — or, better yet, some chopped sardines mixed into some vegetables — out for them.
Afraid of becoming the hangout for the neighborhood strays? The following article will show you what steps you can take to be kind to strays while not becoming their victim:
How to help a stray cat
Cats abound in my neighborhood. They are often seen walking along the top of our fence, and heard in their nocturnal antics. Our own two cats are inside only cats…they watch these others from the windows and sometimes yowl or meow at the intruders on “their” territory. Judging from the number of people on our street who leave their garage doors open about 6 inches from the ground, many of these cats have human homes. But many do not.
Sometimes I cannot tell for certain, since the cat will appear well-fed and have a healthy coat. But more times than not, they are a little ragged at the edges, matted, or clearly thin.
I put out water (since it gets very hot here)… and once in while, I put out food. I call animal control and the cat rescues. Still I have to wonder why people let their cats wander or dump their cats in neighborhoods such as ours (we have open spaces behind us).
We get both cats and dogs a lot. My post today is just a reminder, that these living beings need our help. Our kind placed them in these predicaments and our kind need to be responsible care givers.
Please, please, please – Spay/Neuter your pets (even indoor only ones). The fewer “throw away” animals, the better life will be for those that are here.

T-N-R — I like that. We tend to see stray cats in our neighborhood as well, and leaving water (and maybe a little food) is a good idea. But catching them and having them neutered is an actual step toward a real solution!
